SE Home

Project Description:

Our work to imagine new types of homes for older adults began with The Future of Aging book co-authored by SE Health and Idea Couture.  The importance of communities and homes in creating health and wellness is the theme of the book’s first chapter and inspired SE Health to consider what role it could take in shaping a better future by reimagining a more age-friendly housing concept.

After months of research, scanning the international landscape, and speaking directly with dozens of older adults, we created our own design principles and developed an early housing prototype with architectural partners SvN Architects.  We call our concept SE Home.

SE Health is now exploring opportunities to make this vision a reality and is seeking partners to work with to build and operate more affordable and more supportive apartments for older adults across the country.   Reach out to alexiswise@sehc.com for more information.

To learn more about how SE Health is supporting other health organizations to take a leadership role in growing the supply and range of affordable housing options for older adults see our work on the Building With Mission Project.

Our SE Home Design Principles point to the vision we are trying to achieve:

  1. High quality homes that inspire pride in residents and are designed to be operationally efficient over the long term.
  2. Homes maximize wellbeing for older residents through the application of universal design.
  3. Adaptive & flexible units, as well as common areas, are designed to enable aging-in-place as people’s situations evolve, and to create an atmosphere where families and friends will seamlessly flow.
  4. Communities are designed to meet current and future needs and desires and challenge societal notions of what ageing looks like.
  5. Communities are integrated within neighbourhoods to create an open and diverse experience where all ages are welcome.
  6. We are rooted in a non-medical model of health and focus on designing built environments that create wellbeing and where residents can choose to invite service providers into their homes as needed.
  7. We incorporate technology as needed and ensure access to nature is integrated into the design and experience to support seamless wellbeing and autonomy.
